Federal Judge Broadens Ban on Funding Cuts

(MENAFN) A United States federal judge has put a stop to the Trump administration's plan to restrict federal financial aid to various sanctuary cities and counties, many of which are among the largest urban areas in the country.

Back in April, District Judge William Orrick determined that President Donald Trump's initiative to cut funding from local governments that limit cooperation with immigration authorities was unconstitutional.

This initial decision affected more than a dozen jurisdictions, including San Francisco, Sacramento, Minneapolis, and Seattle.

On Friday, Judge Orrick expanded that decision to cover numerous additional cities and counties that had joined the legal challenge.

These newly included jurisdictions encompass Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Baltimore, Denver, and Albuquerque.

In his statement, Orrick pointed out that the Trump administration did not resist the broader application of the injunction, aside from reiterating its stance that the original ruling was flawed—a matter that is already under appeal.

Orrick further restricted the federal government from imposing immigration-related requirements on two particular grant programs.

Shortly after assuming office in January, Trump instructed his administration to suspend federal aid to jurisdictions identified as sanctuary cities.

A few weeks later, he reinforced that federal funding should not be used to support unlawful immigration.

Attorney General Pam Bondi also declared that the Justice Department would deny grants to sanctuary jurisdictions.

The administration maintained that these cities interfere with federal law enforcement efforts and impede ICE from detaining undocumented individuals, including those accused of violent crimes.
