Over 100 Reported Dead, 146 Missing After Boat Overturned in DRC
The tragic incident took place on the Congo River, approximately 122 kilometers from Mbandaka, the capital of Equateur Province, according to official sources cited by local outlets.
While 209 survivors were rescued, many with injuries, all cargo aboard the vessel was destroyed in a fire that followed the sinking.
The cause of the disaster is still under investigation, with authorities yet to confirm any details.
Shipwrecks are unfortunately a frequent occurrence in the DRC, particularly on the Congo River, where overcrowding and poorly maintained vessels often result in such tragedies.
In a separate incident just days earlier, at least 100 people perished when a motorized canoe capsized in the Basankusu territory of Equateur Province on Wednesday night.
