New Name, Same Mission: Non-Profit Goes After Nevada's Wild Horses and Burros

RENO, NV, UNITED STATES, October 31, 2025 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Hidden Valley Wild Horse Protection Fund (HVWHPF) is excited to announce its change of name to NEVADA WILD HORSES (NVWH). This long-established local Nevada non-profit organization was officially organized in 2008. However, volunteers have been working hard for over 40 years to keep the wild horses of east Reno, Nevada safe and on the Virginia Range. HVWHPF is now thrilled to share this highly anticipated change of name for its organization to Nevada Wild Horses.

“Our name change has been in the works for some time now,” said Shannon Windle, President of Nevada Wild Horses. “This name change complements a change in focus for our organization as well. We are moving from the local Virginia Range wild horses and branching out to cover all of Nevada’s wild horses and burros. There is currently no other organization within Nevada that is directing its efforts on one of our state’s most valuable resources – the wild horse and burro populations that inhabit our great State of Nevada.”

According to Windle, “The time has come for us to step up and give a voice to Nevada’s wild horses and burros. Nevada Wild Horses’ mission remains the same – ‘to preserve, protect, promote, and rescue’. However, it is now broadening its efforts to include ALL Nevada burros and wild horses that inhabit the vast landscapes across Nevada. Its focus will be to create a humane, well thought out management plan that will benefit these jewels of the high mountains and low land deserts of Nevada.”

“We look forward to ensuring the preservation and protection of Nevada’s wild horses and burros,” said Kristin Moffitt, Director of Nevada Wild Horses. “The State of Nevada is missing out on tremendous opportunities related to these majestic creatures. Ecotourism is an untapped supply of visitors and revenue for this State. People come from around the world to admire our horses and burros. Let’s make sure they know about ALL the wonders there are to see and enjoy here in Nevada.”

“We are excited to stand up for these incredible animals,” said Matt Moffitt, Director of Nevada Wild Horses. “We see a great future for them. Nevada Wild Horses’ history has been one of driving positive change for the wild horses inhabiting the Virginia Range. We will now take that knowledge and experience and expand our area of expertise across the entire State of Nevada.”

The Internal Revenue Service has recognized this change of name for Nevada Wild Horses with the issuance of its ‘Letter of Affirmation’ recognizing NVWH as tax-exempt under Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 501(c)3. As a public charity, under IRC Sections 509(a)(1) and 170(b)(1)(A)(vi), donations made to NVWH can be classified as tax deductible contributions as provided in IRC Section 170.

The horse evolved on the North American continent about 55 million years ago. Our forefathers brought the modern horse back to this continent – to serve us and create a new nation - and now they inspire, fascinate, and mesmerize us. Horses are well suited to our Nevada environment. With a good management plan, NVWH can ensure they thrive while coexisting with Nevada’s rural communities. Wild horses and burros embody the essence of what Americans hold sacred in our western culture - they are our real Living Spirits of the West.

Nevada’s wild horses and burros belong to all Nevadans and should never be tossed away or treated like garbage. “We look forward to engaging the public in a celebration of wild horses and burros across the State of Nevada!” said Windle. “Our celebration will be ongoing for the next 2 years, and will include our ‘Campaign to Name the Wild Horse One of Nevada’s State Symbols’. We invite the public to help celebrate 2026 as the Year of the Horse, and join us in many special events throughout the year to honor horses and burros.”

Nevada Wild Horses will be hosting a special celebration of its new name and expanded mission at Handel’s Ice Cream, located at 13987 S Virginia St at the Shayden Summit Mall in south Reno at S Virginia and Mount Rose Highway on Wednesday, November 5th - starting at 5:00 thru 8:00 pm. The public and media are encouraged to join in the fun, celebration, education, and delicious ice cream. Bring a copy of Handel’s Ice Cream Living Spirits of the West flyer to ensure your ice cream purchase goes to the good work benefiting wild horses and burros still on the range across Nevada.
