Seventeen Reported Dead as Fire Erupt at Indonesia Office
Emergency responders transported all deceased victims to medical facilities for formal identification procedures, media reported, citing Susatyo Purnomo Condro, who serves as Central Jakarta metro police chief.
According to Condro, the deadly incident began when a battery ignited on the ground level of the seven-story structure. The initial flames rapidly intensified, with toxic smoke billowing upward and reaching the building's sixth floor, trapping occupants in the higher levels.
Search and rescue operations remained ongoing as authorities continued combing through the building's interior for additional casualties.
The tragedy highlights growing concerns about fire safety protocols in Indonesia's densely populated urban centers, where aging infrastructure and rapid development often intersect.
