CLARE, MI, UNITED STATES, September 16, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Advanced Battery Concepts, LLC (ABC), a Michigan-based energy storage technology company, announced today that the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC) energy storage project has received final funding approval from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), clearing the way for the project to move forward.

The project will deploy a 1.15 MW battery energy storage system at GTRLC's headquarters in Traverse City, Michigan, complementing the organization's existing 185 kW solar photovoltaic system. For GTRLC, whose mission centers on protecting northern Michigan's natural resources and advancing responsible stewardship for future generations, the project provides an opportunity to extend those principles to the energy infrastructure supporting its operations.

The project is supported through Congressionally Directed Spending administered by the U.S. Department of Energy. DOE describes the project as a “Solar Energy Demonstration Using Domestically Sourced, and Michigan-built, 100 Percent Reusable Commercial-Scale Lead Battery.”

The 1.15 MW energy storage system will utilize ABC's patented GreenSeal® bipolar lead battery technology and will be housed in three commercial-scale BOX-BE™ energy storage enclosures. GreenSeal® technology is designed to significantly reduce the amount of lead required compared with conventional lead batteries while maintaining the inherent recyclability, safety and domestic supply-chain advantages of lead battery chemistry.

Paired with GTRLC's existing solar array, the system will store solar-generated energy for use when needed, demonstrating how renewable generation and commercially scalable energy storage can work together. The project also highlights Michigan's growing role in the domestic energy storage supply chain, with ABC's battery technology developed and manufactured in the state.

The project has moved into procurement and manufacturing with installation and commissioning to targeted for second quarter 2027.
